harut-jan Khatch's album is a transportive collection of beautiful Armenian melodies, performed with grace and passion. I'm both touched by the softness of childhood while also embraced by the emblematic historic loss expressed in the Armenian voice. about

Welcome to Օրոր ու Նանի - Oror ou Nani: Armenian Lullabies album. The album was made possible through a successful Kickstarter campaign and through the generous support of over 230 backers located within the U.S. and internationally.

Though originally conceived as a project for children, adults may also find rest and relaxation listening to the album. The tracks intentionally start with more lively songs, and the album gradually moves towards slower, meditative lullabies. This is to bring a gradual movement towards rest, relaxation and sleep.

Khatchadour sings in the Western-Armenian dialect. The songs, however, originate from the Eastern-Armenian dialect, which the lyrics and transliterations reflect. Additionally, words such as “oror,” “nani,” and “nanay” are common meditative Armenian sounds that denote “rock-a-bye,” “lullaby,” or “sleep.” English translations are also prepared per song and are found in the downloadable booklet for non-Armenian listeners.

Armenian lullabies are traditionally sung by women. One of the aims of this album is to bridge the gender gap by creating the first modern set of Armenian lullabies sung in a male voice, with the hope of involving all parents in their children’s bedtime rituals. Lullabies are one of the ways in which parent and child can reach a restful and a meditative space together, while intimately communing with the powerful love force, the parent-child bond.

Making this album has been a heartfelt journey of musical unfolding. It gave Khatchadour the opportunity to broaden his creative approach by presenting Armenian meditative voice, blended with electronica and other modern instrumentation, while honoring the ancient sounds of the Duduk woodwind.
